Slate for Upcoming Elections

We wanted to remind you that tomorrow, March 5 is our next PTO meeting at 6pm in the library. Many thanks to those of you who have thrown your hats into the ring for board and committee positions. We literally can’t do what we do for our students, teachers, and staff without you! We have yet to have anyone express interest in the Program Director position. This position oversees non-fundraising activities we do for our school, basically the fun things! Additionally, while our President is willing to serve again, she will have an 8th grader next year and would like to be able to step back a bit and transition someone else in the role while still being able to help and support where needed. If you or someone you know is interested in either of these positions, it’s not too late to let us know! Email Elections will be at our April meeting with officer transition in May. Looking forward to seeing lots of you at our meeting tomorrow!

Lots of Info to Pass Along

Jag Families,

We have lots to update for you heading into the weekend!

ISTEP week is almost here! Our students will be taking their first round of tests beginning the week of 2/26. PTO is preparing sling bags filled with a water bottle and a snack to get the first round of testing off on the right foot. We need your help in getting over 1,700 bags distributed to our students. We will be delivering bags to the classrooms of 5th and 6th grade students next Friday, 2/23 and handing out bags to 7th and 8th graders in the commons during their lunch periods on Monday, 2/27.  If you can help with distribution, please sign up at A huge thank you to Periago Orthodontics, LLC for their generous donation to fund this!

Also coming up: The HHMS counselors are hosting “Middle School Survival Night Part II” on 2/27, and it will be geared towards 6th grade parents from 6-6:40 and ALL parents from 6:45-7:30. Our PTO would like to provide delicious “comforting” desserts for the event. If you can help, please bring your desserts to HHMS between the hours of 8:30 am & 4:15 pm on Tuesday, 2/27. Please label your dessert if it contains nuts. Please note we cannot accept items that need to be refrigerated.  If you can bring a dessert, sign up at Thank you so much for helping out!

We are still very much in need of candidates for our upcoming PTO board elections. PTO is a great way to stay connected with the school and our students! If you feel like you have the interest but not enough time, know that not all of us are stay at home parents, and if you have a friend who would like to team up as a co-chair, that is a possibility! We encourage anyone who might be interested in either a board or committee position to please email We literally can’t do it without you!

And finally, we wanted to let you know about a proposed amendment to our bylaws. You can see our current bylaws and the proposed amendment here: The proposed amendment is in response to changes in state regulation of bookkeeping accounts kept through school accounts. If you have questions, email us at The proposal will be voted on after publication for a month.

Terrific Third Thursday!

We wanted to remind our families that tomorrow is February’s Terrific Third Thursday! Turn in Box Tops (in baggies with your student’s name on a slip of paper inside), visit the State Street Chick Fil-A (remember to tell them you’re there for HHMS spirit day before you pay so we get credit), and visit Kroger with your HHMS PTO linked Kroger Card!

PTO Meeting Correction

Jag Families,

Last week’s email of upcoming events listed the wrong date for our next PTO meeting. We will meet on Tuesday, February 13 at 4pm in the library. Sorry for any confusion!

It’s Always Busy at the GMS on the P!

Congratulations to the following HHMS parents who will be joining us for a fun evening at Huber’s Plantation Hall on 3/9 at 6pm. In the event you are unable to attend, please let President Connie Hynes know ASAP at, and she will fill the seats with our alternates. We had a huge amount of teacher and parent interest, so we are taking 8 staff members and 8 parents. If you did not get selected but would like to attend with us, we are looking into adding a third table of 8, but it will cost $60/person. If you are interested in purchasing a ticket (or two) for this additional table (so that all of us can sit together) please let me Connie know by the evening of Tuesday, February 6. This is also the last call for donations to our silent auction basket. Email Connie if you have items to donate.

The Random Acts of Kindness Club will be sponsoring a Kindness Gram/Appreciation Station on Wednesday, 2/14 before school and at lunches. Parents are needed to help. Sign up at

February’s Terrific Third Thursday is next week, 2/15: Eat at the State Street Chick Fil-A (remember to say you’re there for HHMS PTO before you pay), turn in Box Tops in baggies with your student’s name on a slip of paper, and shop at Kroger with your HHMS PTO linked Kroger card!

And finally, it’s hard to believe, but we’re already looking ahead to this year’s PTO Board elections. All positions are single year positions, and while we have a few board members willing and able to run for their current positions, we have a number of members who will be unable to run due to their students moving on to high school. Board positions include President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, Fundraising Director, Communications Director, Hospitality Director, and Programs Director. Our Vice President, Secretary, Hospitality Director, and Programs Director will all move on, so our need to fill these positions is particularly great. We also have a number of appointed committee chair positions such as Walkathon, Holiday Bazaar, Success Cards, and many others if you would like to take on a smaller role. If you have any interest in running for a board position or taking on a more focused, shorter term commitment through one of our chair positions, please email so the nominating committee can gather candidates to prepare for the election. Involvement in the PTO through board or committees is a great way to stay connected to school happenings and a rewarding way to give back to the school community!

NAFCS Education Foundation Gala

Attention parents and grandparents of HHMS students!

The annual NAFCS Education Foundation Gala will be held on Friday, March 9 at 6pm at Huber’s Plantation Hall. This year, the main goal is to involve more parents, and we are hoping you will consider attending with us! Who can attend?
Any adult interested in supporting the education of Floyd County students. Parents specifically encouraged!

What do I wear?
Wear something that makes you feel comfortable. The majority of attendees dress in business or business casual clothing, and some who like to get dressed up wear cocktail attire. It’s up to you.

How much does it cost?
If you are selected from our random drawing, HHMS PTO will buy your ticket (we have purchased two tables of 8 each). Simply email your name(s) to by Thursday 2/1, and we will notify winners (selected by random drawing) on Friday, 2/2.

What happens at the gala and what’s included?
Hors d’oeuvres, dinner and a cash bar
Silent and live auction
Live entertainment
A showcase and celebration of NAFC Schools

What if I am not selected to attend with PTO but would still like to attend?
We would LOVE to have you. (It’s also a great way to support the schools and advertise for your business at the same time!) Tickets range from $60 per individual to $3000 for a station sponsorship, and everything in between…there is literally something for everyone. Go to the event website for more information or to purchase tickets:

If I can’t attend but would like to help, what should I do?
HHMS PTO is donating a Highland Hills bag of swag to the silent auction. We are looking for additional donations of gift cards, tutoring sessions, music or sports lessons, free services (such as landscaping, law, real estate, beauty, massage, plumbing, etc.), free tickets to sporting/entertainment events, free passes to attractions, or anything else you may have that has value to others. Please email and we will arrange pickup or drop off of your item (please email by Friday, 2/2). Donations are tax deductible and documentation can be provided upon request.
